Easy After School Snack Ideas

Easy after school snack ideas can be stressful to find, often my kids will get home hungry, will open the fridge and/or cupboard and say the often said words “there’s nothing to eat!!” I’m sure you can relate. I hope you enjoy these little ideas.

Apple turtles

These cute little apple turtles are a sweet way to get your little ones eating their fruit. Get your kids to help you make them or just serve them up and watch them disappear.

  • 2 green apples
  • 6 green grapes
  • 4 mini chocolate chips

  1. Wash apples and slice the base third from the apple.
  2. Place the base on a serving plate and slice 4 grapes in half. Arrange them as the turtle’s flippers.
  3. Using the point of a knife just puncture two holes in each head for eyes. Turn the chocolate chips pointy side down and press into the holes.
  4. Slice one third off the remaining 2 grapes and place as the heads.

  • Nothing other than the natural moisture from the cut fruit was used to piece this turtle together.
  • You could use red apples if you have them on hand.
  • This is a cute way to get toddlers to tuck into their fruit.
  • You can get little ones to help you with these at the grape stage. Just give them a plastic picnic knife to slice the fruit.

  2. Peel banana and lay in on the edge of the tortilla.
  3. Roll banana in tortilla.
  4. Slice into rounds and arrange on a plate with the cut edge facing up.

  • You can use flat bread or mountain bread in place of tortillas.

  • If you want nice clean cuts, be sure to wipe your knife between slices.

Zucchini brownieseasy after school snack ideas

These zucchini brownies are chocolatey, moist and devoid of any zucchini flavour. Sneak extra veggies into the kids’ diet with this delicious treat.

  • 1 1/2 cups (225g) white sugar
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (300g) self-raising flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa, sifted
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups finely grated zucchini (approx. 2 medium zucchini)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 3 tbsp pure icing sugar

  1. Preheat oven to 180C (160C fan-forced). Line a 20cm x 20cm cake tin with baking paper and set aside. In a bowl, combine sugar, oil, vanilla, flour, cocoa, eggs and salt.
  2. Stir in the zucchini and chocolate chips until well combined.
  3. Pour mixture into prepared tin.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until cooked through. Cool and sift icing sugar over the top. Cut into squares.

  • This mixture is really dry before you add the zucchini. Stir in the zucchini and chocolate chips until well combined.
  • You don’t need to squeeze moisture out of the grated zucchinis.
  • If you don’t have chocolate chips, you can add 200g of melted chocolate in its place.
  • This is such a sneaky way to get kids to eat zucchini!
