She is passionate about her academic work and devotes considerable energies to developing both ‘basic’ research and its applications to hospital settings. Her research and writing involve working closely with two academics in the same field in her department – one of whom in particular is a highly respected scholar in the field in many parts of the world – as well as with postgraduate research students and, in applied research, hospital doctors. As her career has progressed, Kriszta has been increasing her submissions to high status English-medium journals.

How this book is organized The book has four main themes which cut across all chapters: the global status of English; the geopolitics of academic text production; the relationship between local and global knowledge production; and the politics of participation in academic knowledge production, including issues of access to, and use of, a range of resources (human, linguistic, material). Chapters 2 to 4 examine key aspects of academic text production in a global context by focusing in detail on scholars’ interests, practices and experiences of engaging in academic text production for publication.

She knows both German and Russian well, although currently uses both little, and also some Hungarian. She studied English at school and at university but had little opportunity to use English before 1989: During socialism, you know, there were not enough opportunities to use English. At the beginning I tried to do translation work, something like that, but there weren’t many jobs, not many opportunities and therefore, for, I don’t know, 13 to 15 years, I didn’t use English almost at all. Only after the revolution, after ’89, I had a teaching job and I then had to begin to study English again.
